Ethically-made, customizable lingerie for plus sizes is nearly unheard of. However, when one of plus size fashion's biggest bloggers gets involved, it's a serious game-changer for the industry. That’s exactly what happened when New York-based lingerie brand, Impish Lee, teamed up with Corissa Enneking of Fat Girl Flow for a fully customizable 16-piece collection, which launched February 13.
Although the collection is made in sizes 0-30 and 28A-44J, any piece can be made larger by providing measurements upon checkout. Not only does this collection feature one of the widest size ranges available, but also is the first lingerie collaboration featuring a blogger over size 24.
Impish Lee is run by sister duo Kali and Noelle Lee Ventresca. They didn’t set out to become lingerie designers, but when Noelle took up sewing seven years ago, she fell in love with intimates. They first started testing the waters with their line on Etsy, which is where Corissa first discovered them.
Once on Etsy, Kali and Noelle noticed the need for more custom options allowing the customer to get exactly what they want, while cutting down on waste. This became the foundation for their growing brand.
“We have a unique structure that allows us to offer one of the widest size ranges in the industry, since we only produce product that is already designed and purchased,” says Kali. “This enables us to offer trillions of possible designs without needing to mass manufacture, sell, markdown, and potentially add to waste within the fashion industry.”
This business model lends itself to the plus size market, which is often times left with options spanning multiple sizes (i.e. 3X/4X), pieces that can only be purchased in sets, or (my personal nemesis) “Queen Size” versions of straight size items. As a blogger who regularly reviews lingerie for her popular YouTube channel, Corissa knows first-hand all the plus size lingerie shopping struggles. She hoped to tackle them with this collaboration.
“For me, finding lingerie that isn’t in scratchy synthetic fabric is HARD,” says Corissa. “It’s also nearly impossible for me to find garters with stretch that don’t cut into me. Rompers are hard - and a personal favorite that I’m always in search for - because I’m tall and long waisted. Impish Lee makes everything custom to your measurements, so it all fits like a dream.”
The collaboration was a natural fit for the Impish Lee team, too.
“We love Corissa’s self-love message, her sassy, witty sense of humor, and her fashion sense, of course!” says Kali. “We just found her vibe to be very in tune with our own message as well. We are the biggest proponents of women owning their body, cherishing its uniqueness, and exploring their own creativity and style aesthetic. We are a brand that stands behind enabling our clientele to be a part of the creative process; wear what YOU adore.”
The Fat Girl Flow x Impish Lee collection features a mix of bralettes, robes, rompers, slips, skirts, playsuits, panties and garter belts. For a 16-piece collection, there’s a wide variety of styles. It’s true to Impish Lee’s vintage-inspired vibe, but with Corissa’s modern sensibilities.
Centered around soft beige fabrics, deep red, and moody florals, the minimalist collection is a total departure from the all black or bright red lingerie we usually see in plus sizes. Corissa selected this palette with intention.
“I wanted to stay away from black because a majority of plus-size lingerie is already black,” says Corissa. “It was important to me to use colors that plus-size consumers don’t get access to, because people assume we’re trying to diminish or hide ourselves. Of course, the pieces can be ordered in black as well, we just want to show that we as plus size babes get the same fun colorful options as everyone else! Impish Lee uses a variety of velvets, mesh, and modal and they are all incorporated into the line and so so luxe.”
From the fabrics to the customization process, Fat Girl Flow x Impish Lee offers a high-end lingerie shopping experience you just don’t find in plus sizes. Ranging from $98-$168, price points reflect the handmade, ethical model. While this may be a higher price point than plus size shoppers may be used to, this collection fills an important void in the industry.
“Many women with larger busts find it so hard to find a bra that fits, let alone a bralette,” says Noelle. “By using bra sizing, we are able to give the support that larger breasts need. We also firmly believe that no matter your size, you deserve the same options as the rest of the straight sized world. We’ve worked very hard to create intimates that are not only flattering in every size, but also very, very comfortable. This is paramount to us and it drives us to study fit in a very critical way.”
Seeing how the items fit on both Corissa and fellow lookbook model, Ilianna Ayala, shows these pieces can work for a variety of body types. Whether large or small busted, tall or short, hourglass or apple-shaped, Impish Lee aims to create pieces that fit for all bodies.
“Every plus-size body is unique and beautiful, and we all carry our weight differently,” says Corissa. “We’re not all hourglasses, and a lot of my plus-size friends can’t buy lingerie sets because they’re different sizes on top and bottom. Impish Lee celebrates all bodies, and doesn’t have this preconceived notion about what plus-size bodies should look like. They give you specific details on how to measure and all of their pieces are literally made for your body, and you can absolutely tell when you put them on.”
