Lingerie of the Week: Universal Standard Thames Fog Dress

I don't know about you, but I love the idea of a mesh dress. Obviously, it's perfect for outerwear as part of a layered look, but a sheer dress is also excellent as lay-around-the house loungewear. Universal Standard's Thames Fog Dress is a recent discovery, but I'm already plotting how it'd look in my wardrobe. The black or plum would be great paired with a more opaque slip or chemise for wearing out of doors, but it would also look brilliant with an embellished bodysuit (a major trend for this season), or even a pair of leggings with a showstopping bra underneath.

If you haven't heard of them yet, Universal Standard is a relatively new brand, founded in September 2015 by Polina Veksler and Alexandra Waldman, who left the worlds of Private Equity and Marketing, respectively, to found the fashion label. They're all about a minimalist aesthetic, and focus exclusively on direct-to-consumer e-commerce (a direction more and more brands are turning to nowadays).

Universal Standard is conceptualized a bit differently than mainstream fashion or even plus size fashion labels, with their size chart beginning at a US 10 and ending at a US 28. This is interesting because common fashion knowledge says a brand has to choose either plus sizes or core sizes to specialize in, with luxury brands in particular encouraged to have very small size ranges. I love how Universal Standard is pushing against that boundary and encouraging consumers, manfacturers, and retailers alike to think differently about how we all approach the fashion industry.

The Thames Fog Dress is available in black, navy, plum, pink, and yellow and retails for $80. Care instructions are to handwash and lay flat to dry. Basically, treat it like nice lingerie.

What are your thoughts on the Thames Fog Dress and Universal Standard's approach to sizing? Do you believe it's something that should catch on?
